NFLPA 'concerned' about safety of players at MetLife Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers had about as brutal of a win as you can have on Sunday, losing Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, Raheem Mostert, Jimmy Garoppolo and Tevin Coleman to injuries during the game. With Bosa and Thomas set to miss the remainder of the season with ACL tears, while the others could miss several weeks, some are wondering if the field might be to blame for the unusual number of injuries. As such, the NFL Players Association is reportedly pushing for a review of MetLife Stadium following the game.

"We are concerned, it’s absolutely a concern for us," a union source told Yahoo Sports. "We are very concerned about it being a serious health and safety issue for players — and turf continuing to be a health and safety issue in general."

The anonymous union source said the union plans to speak with commissioner Roger Gooddell about overall concerns about the safety of playing on turf instead of grass. There is data that suggests that injury risks increase playing on artificial surfaces rather than grass.

It's an already complicated situation further complicated by the fact that the 49ers will play at MetLife again Sunday against the Giants. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead called the prospect of playing there twice "anxiety-provoking" and labeled the field as "trash," while 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was a bit more diplomatic about the whole situation.

"I don’t know exactly why it happened, but as far as the feeling that was on the sidelines — that’s as many knee injuries and ankle stuff and people getting caught on the turf as I’ve ever been a part of," Shanahan said.
