NFL insider thinks Packers could make a run at Odell Beckham Jr.

Although rookie Romeo Doubs has had a solid first three games, it’s no secret the Green Bay Packers passing offense could use a shot in the arm.

Through three weeks, Aaron Rodgers ranks 21st in the NFL in passing yards (684) — about 40 yards per game fewer than his career average — while the Packers rank 19th in passing offense and 14th in touchdown passes.

The 38-year-old signal-caller hasn’t thrown for more than 255 yards in a game this year, and the Packers don’t pose much of a threat vertically with just two receivers with a reception of 40 yards or more, prompting one NFL analyst to suggest Green Bay could bolster its receiver group with a premier name.

“I think the Packers signing or trading for a receiver will come down to opportunity — it’ll be who is available, rather than just plucking from those that are,” SI.com’s Albert Breer said in his recent mailbag. “I could see Odell Beckham Jr. as an option when he gets healthy. But I don’t think you’ll see an overreach, where they do something just to do something.”

Beckham Jr., of course, is still recovering from an ACL tear he suffered in the Super Bowl, and those in the know estimate he won’t return until after Thanksgiving.

With Sammy Watkins on injured reserve and Allen Lazard dealing with an ankle injury since Week 1, Doubs has been the Packers' leading receiver, registering 14 receptions, 16 targets and 137 yards receiving. Fellow rookie Christian Watson has been targeted seven times through two games, catching five passes for 43 yards.

It’s clear the Packers believe Doubs and Watson are the future at wideout, but it remains to be seen exactly how much slack they’ll be afforded before the team is forced to bring in reinforcements.

“Right now, I’d say they’re going to get their young receivers as many reps as they possibly can,” Breer continued. “…To me, the Packers believe there is a pretty high ceiling with Doubs and Watson, and now is the time to get them ramped up so they’re more seasoned and ready to play bigger roles deeper into the season.”
