Insider floats Jim Harbaugh, Colin Kaepernick coaching connection
Jim Harbaugh and Colin Kaepernick Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

An NFL insider thinks there’s a possibility former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick could join Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staff on the Los Angeles Chargers for the 2024-25 NFL season.

Kaepernick and Harbaugh have a good relationship. The former signal-caller promoted the idea of Harbaugh's return to the NFL this month. Following Kaepernick’s comments, one question was whether  Kaepernick would be willing to give up his dreams of being a quarterback in the NFL to coach quarterbacks in the NFL.

That might be closer to happening than most people imagine.

Two former San Francisco 49ers could join forces next season

According to Mike Florio with NBC Sports, Harbaugh has shown interest in promoting Kaepernick’s career in the past:

During the early days of Kaepernick’s collusion-fueled exile from the NFL, Harbaugh appeared on PFT Live and vowed that Kaepernick could deliver championships — plural — to an NFL team," Florio wrote. "Two years ago, Harbaugh (as PFT reported) was considering the possibility of bringing Kaepernick to Minnesota as the quarterbacks coach, if Harbaugh had been hired. It’s unknown whether Kaepernick, now 36, would have been (or now would be) willing to do that."

Jim Harbaugh has the power to hire Colin Kaepernick

Florio believes Harbaugh has the political capital to hire Kaepernick to his new staff with the Chargers “in an effort to right a seven-year wrong” of Kaepernick being ousted from the league.

Hiring Kaepernick would be a profoundly polarizing decision for Harbaugh and the Chargers. Many fans are passionate about never wanting to see Kaepernick in the NFL again. However, many other fans appreciate what Kaepernick protested and risked.

Harbaugh said he disagreed with Kaepernick’s protest. But Harbaugh didn’t believe in canceling Kaepernick for exercising his right to protest in a manner that a military veteran advised..

Maybe it’s time certain NFL fans learned to coexist with a player who has different beliefs.
