New Bolts Coach Returns to NFL After Seven Year Hiatus
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers posted their updated coaching staff under Jim Harbaugh this week. While this is not the finalized staff, it does include all the hires the team has made so far.

One of these hires includes senior offensive assistant Marc Trestman, who makes his return to the NFL after seven years away from the league. He has yet to prove that he can actually contribute positively to an NFL offense. Trestman spent almost three decades as an assistant coach in college football, the NFL and head coach in the CFL before finally getting his shot as a NFL head coach with the Chicago Bears, via Chargers communications.

Trestman survived just two seasons with the Bears, as Chicago posted a 13-19 record under his guidance in 2013-2014. Next, he became an offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens from 2015-2016. In his second season as OC, he only lasted until October before being fired.

Once again, Trestman revitalized his career in the CFL, this time serving as a head coach for the Toronto Argonauts. In his first season with the Argonauts, Trestman led his team to a Grey Cup championship and won the CFL Coach of the Year award.

Trestman then started out as a head coach for the Tampa Bay Vipers of the XFL, before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the season short.

After a whirlwind career since leaving the NFL, Trestman is back working for the Chargers offense. Trestman joins an offensive staff that includes offensive coordinator Greg Roman, quarterbacks coach Shane Day, wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, offensive line coach Mike Devlin, passing game coordinator Marcus Brady and run game coordinator/tight ends coach Andy Bischoff.
