Mike Greenberg’s Greatest NFL Team Selection Will Surprise Fans
Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

There have been plenty of great teams that have graced the NFL. From the Green Bay Packers to the Kansas City Chiefs, there have been plenty of great teams that provided countless moments for fans throughout the years.

There are plenty of great teams that graced the league throughout the years, and fans have their picks on which team is the greatest to ever assemble in the world’s top football league. One analyst gave his take on which team is the best NFL team in history, and his answer will raise eyebrows.

Mike Greenberg chooses 1972 Miami Dolphins as the greatest NFL team

ESPN host Mike Greenberg isn’t shy about letting fans know about his thoughts. During the leadup to Super Bowl LVIII, talk about which team was the greatest to ever grace the NFL was brought up.

While some may have thought that he’d choose a more recent squad, he made a surprising choice with he 1972 Miami Dolphins. The Spun’s Chris Rosvoglou wrote about the qualities that made the 1972 Dolphins the best option for Greeny:

The Dolphins had a dominant rushing attack led by Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris. They both recorded over 1,000 yards on the ground that season. The defense was equally impressive, surrendering just 12.2 points per game.

It’s easy to see why Greenberg chose the Fins’ 72 team as the greatest football team. While teams like the Kansas City Chiefs or the New England Patriots enjoyed stretches of dominant football, their teams haven’t had an undefeated season in their history.

Earl Morrall was the team’s QB1, who passed for 1360 passing yards and 11 touchdowns. Howard Twilley, Marlin Briscoe, and Otto Stowe were the team’s top receivers while Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris were unstoppable running backs.

If you look at the numbers, one may think that they don’t hold a candle to the Chiefs and Patriots. However, it’s important to remember that it’s hard to be undefeated in an NFL season. Even if it happened in the 70s, to enjoy an undefeated season is an incredible achievement for any NFL team.

However, if one of the modern NFL teams manages to get an undefeated regular season and win the Super Bowl, the conversation may change.
