Mike Greenberg’s devastation continues on Get Up after Aaron Rodgers’ injury

If you watched ESPN‘s “Get Up” at any time over the past six months, then you know that Mike Greenberg has been as excited as anyone to see Aaron Rodgers in a New York Jets uniform.

Unfortunately for Greenberg and Jets fans everywhere, Rodgers’ time on the field in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills Monday lasted just four plays. It was on that fourth play where Rodgers was sacked by Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd, tearing his Achilles in the process.

With one awkward landing, the trajectory of the Jets’ once promising season changed, as did Greenberg’s mood. A stunned Greenberg could only watch in disbelief as the Jets’ supposed savior was carted off to the locker room. During Tuesday’s edition of “Get Up,” Greenberg’s sadness continued on-air. So much so, that Greenberg couldn’t even make it through his opening monologue.

“Alright, I can’t do this,” Greenberg said, via the New York Post. “I just can’t… Stop it. Kill the music; kill the graphics; kill the video. I can’t pretend this is alright. I cannot pretend this is a normal morning… Cannot do the big voice. I cannot pretend the energy is here.

“I’m sorry. I said I’m going to try and do the show normal today but these are not normal circumstances.”

Greenberg continued to say that he hadn’t even yet processed what occurred at MetLife Stadium on “Monday Night Football.”

“[We were watching the game] at the house and in all honestly people want to know how I feel and the truth is there is no way in the world have I processed this,” Greenberg said. “I understand that millions of things have happened yesterday in the world that in the big picture were more significant than this. But from a sports perspective, this is about as overwhelming as anything that could possibly happens… all the excitement and all the possibilities.

“For it to come to an end like that, that quickly, there is no way I have fully taken in the magnitude of what happened on the fourth play last night.”

What has been lost in the Rodgers conversation is the Jets did, in fact, win the football game. Xavier Gipson, the “Hard Knocks” darling and undrafted free agent out of Stephen F. Austin, returned a punt 65 yards to give New York a 22-16 victory in overtime.

Gipson’s game-winning score followed four quarters of the Jets’ defense dominating the Bills, forcing four turnovers of quarterback Josh Allen. The offense did just enough after some clutch throws from backup quarterback Zach Wilson and an insane touchdown catch from receiver Garrett Wilson.
