Mike Greenberg puts Kenny Pickett’s mindset under the microscope following shocking trade from Steelers to Eagles
Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN Get Up presenter Mike Greenberg was baffled by Kenny Pickett ‘s decision to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers and be the backup to Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. Pickett’s sudden change of heart comes after the Steelers recently signed Russell Wilson .

DraftKings had previously predicted that the Steelers were the ideal destination for Wilson when the Denver Broncos released him. The 35-year-old flew to Steel City and met with the front office and coaches. Last Sunday, the Steelers announced they were signing Wilson on a one-year deal.

However, just four days later, reports surfaced that the Steelers had agreed to trade Kenny Pickett to the Eagles in exchange for draft picks. Greenberg raised the question, which most football connoisseurs would want answers to as well. The longtime ESPN contributor rightfully pointed out that Pickett would have a better chance of getting more game time staying in Pittsburgh rather than Philadelphia.

Greenberg wrote on X:

I struggle to understand his thinking. Pickett has a much better chance of beating out Russell Wilson for a team that drafted him in the first round than beating out Jalen Hurts on a team that didn’t. Mike Greenberg wrote on X

Later, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette revealed that Pickett did not like the idea of Wilson being the starter. He did not handle the news well. So he requested to be traded.

Mike Greenberg has been critical of Kenny Pickett

Before Wilson’s addition to the Steelers squad, several other players were linked with a move to Acrisure. One of them was Justin Fields , who has been constantly linked with a move away from the Chicago Bears. During one of the episodes of Get Up, Greenberg revealed whom the Steelers should pick between Pickett and Fields.

He said, as per the Steel Curtain:

If 32 teams had the choice of Kenny Pickett or Justin Fields right now, all would take Fields. Mike Greenberg said

Both players were coming off another disappointing season. While Fields did show some signs of improvement, Pickett spent most of his time bench-warming after getting injured. But Fields had more touchdowns (16) last season compared to Pickett’s (13) entire NFL career. Not only that, the University of Pittsburgh graduate ranks bottom in the touchdown-to-interception ratio.

It would be unfair to put the complete blame on either of them. Their offensive coordinators have to share a portion of the blame as well. Pickett had first-time OC Matt Canada, who got fired even before the season ended, and Fields had Luke Getsy, who switched Chicago for Las Vegas in the offseason.
