Matthew Butler Discusses His Goals For Upcoming Season
USA TODAY Sports

Year 2 is just around the corner for Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Matthew Butler.

Drafted by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Tennessee, the prospect went on to play in six games for the Silver and Black, recording five combined tackles and half a sack.

With a full season under his belt, Butler knows what it takes to be a competitor in this league, and he'll need to use that experience in training camp when he battles for a more prominent role on the Raiders' interior defensive line.

Butler discussed his approach to this upcoming season when he joined Wednesday's episode of "Good Morning Football."

"So, that competition's going to bring out the best in me; it's also going to bring out the best from the guys in our group," Butler said. "This offseason, I've been learning myself, learning my body, working on modalities for my body, cultivating trust and camaraderie with my teammates, and just trying to get better. I've been in guys on our team's ear, whether it be Maxx Crosby, Chandler Jones, other vets at different positions, and I've had the opportunity to talk to some guys around the league just about ways that they're continuing to get better, ways that they're staying in the league, ways that they're achieving their goals.

"My goal: keep it simple, be in tremendous shape, do my job to the very best of my ability every day, consistently, and help this team in every way imaginable."

While Butler has his personal goals, he also acknowledged the unselfishness of the defense as a group.

"We all want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves," he said. "It's not just about us. It's not just about the defense. It's about the team. And when you put the team first, the possibilities are endless."

Butler and the Raiders will report to training camp on July 25.
