Luke Kuechly Praises NC State LB Payton Wilson
USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers will undergo a massive renovation on the offensive side of the football this offseason, but they won't turn a blind eye to the defense. If the Panthers' front office cares much for what legendary linebacker Luke Kuechly has to say, they may consider taking a linebacker on day two of this year's draft.

"At the draft... I always look at linebackers and there's a guy that I've loved watching for a long time up at NC State, Payton Wilson," Kuechly said in a guest appearance on Up and Adams Wednesday morning. "He ran extremely well, he was in the 4.4s and he's been super productive and he plays really hard. He's taller than me and he's faster than me. He's got great hair, he's jacked. I like Payton Wilson. I've liked him a lot. He's right up the street in Raleigh, I like him."

Wilson was a four-year starter at NC State, racking up over 400 tackles for his career. Following the 2023 season in which he finished with 138 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, six passes defended, and three interceptions, Wilson was named a consensus First-Team All-American.

Wilson is ranked the 72nd-best prospect in the draft, according to CBS Sports.

However, his draft range is rather wide. Some believe he could sneak into the back end of the first round while others feel like he'll still be around in the third. He's suffered two ACL tears (one in high school) and a pretty significant shoulder injury, so the medical part of it is likely what's holding him back from being a clear-cut early day two pick.
