Kansas City Chiefs: Colossal Chris Jones Contract Details Revealed
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Chris Jones was set to become the premier player available in free agency this offseason, and the Kansas City Chiefs made a colossal commitment to their All-Pro defensive tackle to ensure that didn’t happen.

The Chiefs made Jones the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL, in a move that underscores the Kansas City Chiefs are pushing all the chips into the middle of the table to try to win a third consecutive Super Bowl.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Jones’ deal is a five-year pact worth $158.75 million, with $101 million guaranteed, and includes a $30 million signing bonus, as well as the first two years of the contract being fully guaranteed.

The contract is befitting of Jones’ value to the Kansas City Chiefs’ franchise, and the kind of commitment that made it an easy choice not to test the free agent market.

Why Signing Chris Jones was Kansas City Chiefs’ Top Priority

The Kansas City Chiefs found out pretty quickly early in the 2023 campaign just how valuable Jones is to their Super Bowl aspirations.

It isn’t a stretch to say Jones is the Chiefs’ most important player not named Patrick Mahomes.

Last season, Jones finished with 10.5 sacks, providing a consistently dominant interior pass-rush presence, while adding 30 total tackles.

Pro Football Focus points out that Jones also posted 75 total quarterback pressures en route to an elite 90.3 pass-rush grade and 84.1 overall mark.

Through his first eight seasons, Jones has logged 273 total tackles with 75.5 sacks, two interceptions, with one returned for a touchdown, along with 12 forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Jones now is set to anchor the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive line for the next four years, as a cornerstone of the franchise’s success on a defense that was the driving force behind the franchise’s most recent Super Bowl championship.

General manager Brett Veach understands Jones’ value to the Chiefs’ quest to become the first team to ever win three consecutive Super Bowl championships and to the franchise’s run of success and paid the 32-year-old accordingly.
