Jets' Garrett Wilson again addresses expectations after Aaron Rodgers trade

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson earned 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year honors but wants to achieve more now that Aaron Rodgers is his starting quarterback. 

"I expect more than all that," Wilson recently told Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post. "For me, it’s always been about the ultimate confidence in myself and putting the work behind it so you know it can happen when the season comes around. I’m not buying into all that stuff too much. No one’s expectations for me are higher than my own." 

Shortly after Rodgers officially joined the Jets via a trade from the Green Bay Packers in late April, the future Hall of Famer compared Wilson to All-Pro receiver and current Las Vegas Raiders star Davante Adams, the signal-caller's former teammate in Green Bay. 

Around that same time, Wilson noted that he and everyone inside the Gang Green locker room understood the expectations that came with the Jets acquiring the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player. 

Wilson discussed his experiences working with Rodgers during springtime practices. 

"I was trying to be a sponge, and make sure I was locked into learning this new playbook and all the nuances to it," the 22-year-old explained. "It’s been a great learning experience for me and I’ve been able to grow a lot. Having a new offense — in a sense starting over — has been good for us. Being a young guy, I can adapt." 

Per ESPN stats, Wilson finished his first pro season ranked 15th among all players with 1,103 receiving yards. He also led the Jets with 83 receptions, 147 targets and four touchdown grabs while catching passes from Zach Wilson, Mike White, Joe Flacco and Chris Streveler. Logic suggests Wilson should post even better numbers with Rodgers atop the depth chart, but the second-year pro indicated that'd be his standard even if the Jets hadn't completed the blockbuster transaction ahead of this year's draft. 

"Personally, I always have high expectations for where I’m playing," Wilson continued. "...That hasn’t changed this year. The rest of it is pressure from the outside, but I know inside our locker room we want to win every game. No one wants to win more than us, and that’s what’s going to help us on Sundays." 

As of Monday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the Jets fourth among betting favorites at +1100 odds to represent the AFC in Super Bowl LVIII this coming February. To compare, the Kansas City Chiefs entered Monday afternoon atop the list at +350 odds, followed by the Buffalo Bills at +500 and Cincinnati Bengals at +550.
