C.J. Mosley has been among the biggest names to opt out of the upcoming NFL season and the Jets linebacker revealed the reasoning behind his decision during a Facebook Live event meant to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
"Because of COVID, my family is my support system with my son. I didn’t want to risk that obviously," Mosley said. "Just looking at the big picture, for me, I want to make sure I’m mentally and physically the best person I can be so I can be that leader I know I can be."
Mosley is the father of a young son, and like many others who are skipping the season, concern about family was the primary factor.
The Jets defense is missing some major names as it heads into the season. All-Pro safety Jamal Adams was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, and now Mosley will be out for the entire season. Mosley signed a massive five-year, $85 million contract with the Jets before the 2019 season. However, he only played in two games last season before suffering a groin injury that caused him to miss most of the year. The Jets were hopeful Mosley would be able to come into the season healthy to help anchor the defense.
Even with missing most of last season, Mosley has put together an impressive career. He has made the Pro Bowl in four of his first six seasons and was named a second-team All-Pro four times during his time with the Baltimore Ravens.
