Jerry Jones touts Cowboys' championship potential, placing more pressure on Dak Prescott

Skepticism about Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott grew after he led the league in interceptions last season (15 in 12 games) and floundered in a second consecutive playoff loss to the 49ers. Yet owner Jerry Jones still believes he can lift the franchise to a Super Bowl title.

"And I think this year we're in a better position to win it than we have been in years," Jones recently said, via NBC Sports' Peter King. "We have the team, and we have the quarterback."

Dallas is a legit contender this season. Per OddsChecker, it has the sixth-best Super Bowl odds. But Prescott's ability to elevate his play in big moments is a question that lingers.

In seven seasons, the 30-year-old has a 2-4 record in the postseason. Prescott went 23-of-37 and threw two picks in a 19-12 divisional-round loss to the 49ers last season.

Prescott has used the playoff failures as fuel throughout the offseason to quell doubts about his ability to win pivotal games.

"I think you have to use your scars in that sense," he said, per King. "We're using the things that hurt us last year. That will be our strength this year."

Furthermore, an improved receiving corps should help the former Pro Bowler reduce his interception total. This offseason, Dallas acquired WR Brandin Cooks as a complement to Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb, and second-year WR Jalen Tolbert has looked like a breakout candidate in the preseason.

The rest of his supporting cast is excellent, as the Cowboys have tied with the Bills for the second-most regular-season wins (24) over the past two seasons.

"You don't have a lot of chances like Prescott has now," King wrote. "Entering a season as one of the three best NFC teams (with the Eagles and 49ers) to make the Super Bowl. The chances are fleeting." 

Two years remain on Prescott's contract. To earn an extension, he must deliver a sixth Lombardi trophy to Dallas, its first in 27 years.
