Jalen Hurts claims he seeks something the Eagles have failed to provide
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Until 2022, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had never played under the same offensive system for more than one season dating back to high school.

With recently hired offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Hurts is once again back to learning another system.

During Phase One of the Eagles' offseason workout program, Hurts spoke to reporters on Wednesday where he admitted that he "yearns" for that consistency in an offensive coaching staff.

"As a player, I definitely yearn for sustainability and consistency," Hurts said. "As you know Coach Stout serves for his offensive line room. ...As a quarterback arguing for those things in a play caller and quarterback coach because you kind of see how consistency in those areas can breed excellence, and his track record kind of shows for that. So it's definitely something that I desire."

When Hurts was drafted in 2020, he spent his rookie season learning under Doug Pederson's staff. After Pederson was let go, Nick Sirianni took over in 2021 and he brought on Shane Steichen to be his offensive coordinator.

Hurts spent two seasons with Steichen before he took the head coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts following the Eagles' Super Bowl run.

Eagles quarterback coach Brian Johnson was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023 but was fired in January after the Birds dropped a 10-1 start to the season.

The Eagles hired Kellen Moore to replace Johnson earlier this offseason, leaving Hurts stuck learning yet another offensive system.

"I find myself in a situation very similar to college, in terms of having a constantly revolving door in terms of coordinators and coaches," Hurts said. "But I've always managed to have success in it. And so that's, that's always been a good thing. Because you've been able to, you know, learn from people and apply it and kind of take what applies to you.But in the end, you know, I think that is important."

Despite the revolving door, Hurts has established himself as one of the league's top quarterbacks and one of the reasons for that is because he's such a quick learner, which he prides himself in. However, that doesn't mean he hopes to one day have an offensive staff that sticks.

"We are where we are, but you know that some of those things are kind of surface-level in terms of what we can really accomplish, so I definitely do desire that consistency," Hurts said. "And when you go win, they're probably going to leave. I mean, that's just how it goes. So, my embrace all ends of it, do desire that for sure."
