How Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has gathered intel on new teammates at rookie camp
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes isn't allowed to participate in rookie minicamp with his newest teammates, but he's been keeping tabs on them as they get their feet wet in the NFL.

Only certain NFL players are allowed to partake in rookie minicamp. Rookies and certain first-year players, but also those who haven't accrued a certain amount of playing time or veteran tryout players. Mahomes isn't one of those players and is forced to stay away until voluntary OTAs begin later in May.

Without being able to participate himself, Mahomes has maintained constant communication with QB Chris Oladokun, who acted as his eyes and ears at rookie minicamp. The Chiefs' No. 3 QB on the practice squad in 2023, Oladokun told reporters that he took charge of minicamp this year, which marked his second year attending.

He relayed information to Mahomes after every practice this weekend. That information varied from things on the practice field to interpersonal details that Oladokun learned after interacting with his new teammates.

"It's good because Pat (Mahomes) has called me after every single day like, "Hey, how are the guys doing? What routes are they good at? Things of that nature," Oladokun explained. "Just sort of asking about the guys. Even just in the cafeteria, how are they as dudes? Are they good dudes? That's something that Coach Reid, and all the coaches, we take pride in here. That everyone is a good dude in the building."

While Mahomes has thrown with guys like Jared Wiley, he'll be interacting with them for the first time in an official capacity when OTAs begin in May. Mahomes' chats with Oladokun help build a foundation so that he knows what to expect. He also takes that role and responsibility quite seriously.

Mahomes checking in and getting a headstart on figuring out his new teammates just shows how much he cares. It also shows the detailed approach he takes in his leadership style. He could have just as easily been sipping drinks on the beach in Miami during the F1 Miami Grand Prix this weekend, but instead, his mind was on the team.
