Hall of Famer breaks down inconsistencies of Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence

Hall of Fame quarterback and current NFL analyst Kurt Warner recently spoke with Michael DiRocco of ESPN about the ups and downs experienced by Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence across Lawrence's first three NFL seasons. 

"We've seen a lot of growth from year one to year two and into year three," Warner said about Lawrence. "You see all the talent, you see all the ability, and you see a level of quarterback play from him over the last couple years that excites you. I think the biggest thing is just the consistency of playing at a high level. And for me, that's, you know, making the reads you're supposed to make, making the throws you're supposed to make and doing it on a consistent level. And that to me is where the great quarterbacks are."

Lawrence, the first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, noticeably struggled as a rookie during the failed Urban Meyer experiment but undeniably improved playing under current Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson over the past two seasons. 

However, StatMuse shows that no NFL player has committed more turnovers than Lawrence (60) since Week 1 of the 2021 campaign. Lawrence was responsible for the third-most total turnovers (21) this season. 

"Trevor makes a lot of plays, but he doesn't make all the plays yet," Warner added about the 24-year-old who is 17-16 as a starter under Pederson (1-1 in postseason play). "And that's kind of what I'm waiting for. And that to me is where he needs to go from this point if he's going to take that next jump. I think he's a good quarterback and he's shown us that he's got special ability, but I think that's the thing that's holding him and holding this team back."

According to ESPN stats, Lawrence ended this past regular season ranked 17th in the NFL with a 56.2 adjusted QBR and 23rd with an 88.5 passer rating. Only three quarterbacks tossed more interceptions than Lawrence (14). 

In short, such numbers aren't good enough for a young signal-caller some thought would be competing for Most Valuable Player votes by January 2024.
