Green Bay Packers Love the Versatility of Jordan Morgan

As the Green Bay Packers get offseason workouts underway at rookie minicamp, there are a few positional battles that people are going to be keeping a close eye on. One of them will be along the offensive line, where the team has put together an impressive group of players.

The Packers said goodbye to long-time left tackle David Bakhtiari, who was released as a cap casualty. Guard Jon Runyan Jr. also departed, signing a free agent deal with the New York Giants.

Green Bay made sure to plug those holes, using draft capital on replacements. In the first round, they selected Arizona tackle Jordan Morgan. On Day 3, they came away with Duke center Jacob Monk and Travis Glover out of Georgia State.

All three could factor into the mix, as the Packers will go with the best five offensive linemen they have and figure out the formation later on. Versatility is one of the qualities Green Bay looks at when evaluating linemen and is one of the reasons they were drawn to Morgan in the first place.

“I think he can play all four spots,” Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said. “We’re fortunate enough that we’ve got a lot of guys in our group right now that can do that, and so I think we’ll kind of let the best five battle it out and see where that ends up.”

Morgan was drafted as a tackle, but some evaluators believe that he will find the most success being moved inside to guard. He will likely compete for the starting left tackle job with Rasheed Walker, who more than held his own replacing Bakhtiari last season.

If Walker wins that job, Morgan could find himself in competition with Sean Rhyan for the starting left guard spot vacated by Runyan. Or, he could be in play at right tackle, where Zach Tom started last season.

Tom will be starting in 2024, but the question remains about where. Evaluators have speculated that the Green Bay Packers could move him to center, where they believe he has Hall of Fame potential. 

This is a good problem for the team to have. Should injuries occur during the season, Green Bay has options to plug and play into all five spots along the offensive line as they have done a wonderful job of adding useful depth.
