Giants could be without receiving weapon for 'weeks'

After missing Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury, New York Giants tight end Darren Waller told the media that he might be out of action for "weeks," as passed along by Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.

"The amount of weeks, I'm not sure," Waller said. "But it may take a little bit."

This injury is a particularly disappointing one for Giants fans, who haven't seen their offense at full strength since Saquon Barkley sprained his ankle in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. Barkley would miss three games and return Oct 15, but rejoined an offense led by Tyrod Taylor with QB1 Daniel Jones out with a neck injury.

With Jones set to return for the first time since Week 5, New York's leading receiver will now have to deal an injury he says is different from his previous hamstring injury.

"That one was up top near my butt, this one is down near my knee," he told media from his locker on Oct 29.

While head coach Brian Daboll certainly needs every offensive weapon at his disposal for a Giants team ranked last in the NFL in points-per-game, there is no reason for Waller to rush back.

New York is 2-6, occupies last place in the NFC East and trails five teams for the final wild-card spot in the NFC. While better than the offense, New York's defense hasn't been inspiring, either. Neither unit seems capable of carrying the team on the type of run required to realistically get into the playoffs.

Despite the preseason expectations of many for the Giants to return to the playoffs after making a surprise run in 2022, this season is all but lost. The organization should begin looking to the future and while getting Jones and Waller as many repetitions together as possible is important for that future, Waller seems to have learned a lesson from his time with the Las Vegas Raiders.

To help his team he needs to get his body right.

Waller has the physical ability to be a game changer for the Giants in the passing game, as well as use his size as an asset in the ground game, but must be healthy in order to fill that role well.
