Giants’ Bobby Okereke Leads NFL In This Impressive Stat
Danielle Parhizkaran/NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

There has not been too much to get excited about when it comes to New York Giants football this season. But, they have begun showing some life in the last few weeks of the season, as they head into their Week 13 bye on a two-game winning streak.

The Giants are in a unique position as they are not only on the fringes of a Wild Card spot in the NFC but are also factoring into the mix for a top-five pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Regardless of what happens the remainder of the season, New York’s brain trust can go into next year knowing they have a few building blocks on the roster.

One of those building blocks is linebacker Bobby Okereke. Signed as a free agent this past offseason away from the Indianapolis Colts on a four-year, $40 million deal, many people thought it was a slight overpay.

But, Okereke has proven those doubters wrong with his performance on the field. He has been easily the Giants’ most consistent and best player on their roster this season. Despite playing through numerous injuries, he is still getting the job done week in and week out for this defense.

Okereke has played every defensive snap of all 12 games this season, providing the Giants with the kind of steady production and influence at the linebacker position they haven’t had since Antonio Pierce. He has been a playmaker for the Giants, recording two interceptions with eight passes defended and four forced fumbles. The passes defended and forced fumbles are both career highs.

While his impact in the passing game has been an added bonus, Okereke makes his hay as a sideline-to-sideline tackler always involved in the play. On the season, he has already racked up 113 total tackles with nine tackles for loss.

The most impressive statistic of his comes against the run. According to PFF NY Giants, Okereke has 56 tackles this season in the run game. That is currently leading the NFL, as the next closest player has 50.

On the season, Okereke has a run-defense grade of 79.1, which ranks 18th among linebackers according to PFF. His overall defensive grade of 82.2 is 17th, as he has been one of the best players at his position in the 2023 season.

Okereke is proving to be a great signing by the Giants, developing into a leader for the team. Only 27 years old, he is most definitely a keeper and someone they should be looking to build around, along with Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Deonte Banks and Cor’Dale Flott.
