Former Pro Bowl tight end Jordan Reed retires

Jordan Reed is retiring from the NFL after eight years, ending a career that was defined by potential but derailed by injuries.

Reed spent most of his career with Washington, who drafted him in the third round of the 2013 draft. The tight end's talent was apparent immediately, and in 2015, he had his breakout season, catching 87 passes for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns. After another successful season in 2016, he was named a Pro Bowler for the first (and only) time in his career, establishing himself as one of the most exciting young receiving tight ends in the league.

Unfortunately, Reed battled injuries his entire career, as he never played a full 16-game season. He also suffered seven concussions during his time in the league, including missing the entire 2019 season after getting concussed in a preseason game. He was released by Washington following the season and many assumed that his football career was over.

Reed considered retiring last year but instead signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers. In 10 games, he had 231 receiving yards and four touchdowns. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Reed's "remarkable comeback" last season "allowed him to walk away with no regrets."
