Former NFL player Sergio Brown facing murder, concealment charges in death of mother
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Former NFL safety Sergio Brown is expected in a Chicago-area courtroom Wednesday morning where he will be charged with murder and concealment of a body.

The charges are related to the death of his mother. The hearing is in Maywood, Illinois outside Chicago. The Maywood Police Department sent a statement to TMZ late Tuesday, confirming the Wednesday hearing and releasing a mugshot of Sergio Brown. Coincidenally, he was wearing a Steelers jersey as he was processed.

Police found the body of Myrtle Brown, Sergio’s mother, on Sept. 16. Police discovered her body alongside a creek near her home in Maywood. Worried relatives initially called the police for a welfare check. No family members could contact Myrtle or Sergio Brown. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office ruled her death a homicide. The report said she suffered  “multiple injuries due to assault.”

Relatives started posting on social media, asking the public to help them find Sergio Brown.

“My brother Sergio is still missing,” Nick Brown wrote on Instagram. “If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home.”

Sergio Brown, in video post, said FBI, cops kidnapped him

Brown was in Mexico. He posted a video to Instagram, showing that he was in Mexico City. He denied knowing that his mother was dead. In the video, Brown spoke directly to his followers telling them:

“Fake news…Fake news…Fake news. It has to be the FBI that came into my house on Bob Marley’s death day with the 511 haze and gas unwarranted. They kidnapped me twice from home – the Maywood Police Department. It had to be the FBI or the Maywood police. I thought my f-----’ momma was on vacation.”

When posting the video, he also tagged ESPN.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that Mexican law enforcement had monitored Sergio Brown since Sept. 19. However, they needed an arrest warrant from the United States before picking him up. That warrant finally came and the Mexican authorities picked up Brown and transported him to San Diego about two weeks ago.

Brown, who grew up in Illinois, was the son of Mario and Myrtle Brown. His dad was the first African-American basketball player to compete for Texas A&M. He died this time a year ago. Sergio Brown played collegiately for Notre Dame from 2006-09. He started with the Fighting Irish his final two seasons. He wasn’t drafted in 2010. However, he signed a free agent deal with the Patriots. He played seven years in the NFL, also seeing time with the Colts, Jaguars, Falcons and Bills.
