Former MVP addresses Giants' Brian Daboll, Bill Belichick conundrum

One-time Most Valuable Player and current CBS Sports NFL analyst Boomer Esiason suggested that New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll is on the hot seat after two years on the job now that Bill Belichick seemingly will remain available through the offseason.

"Brian Daboll is gonna have to coach his a-- off," Esiason predicted during Monday's edition of the WFAN "Boomer and Gio" program, per Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "To me, he’s basically gonna be coaching with one hand tied behind his back. Bill Belichick will be available for the first time ever…If the Giants get off to a 1-5 start, that’s gonna be every single phone call to the radio station, that Bill Belichick has to be the head coach. (Giants co-owner) John Mara, if it’s a bad season, he’s gonna talk to him."

Daboll earned Coach of the Year honors after he guided the 2022 Giants to a playoff berth and a road postseason victory. However, this year's team posted a lackluster 6-11 record, and Daboll's alleged "madman" demeanor resulted in defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale leaving the club last month. As noted by Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka also seems eager to get away from Daboll following a frustrating campaign.

As for Belichick, the 71-year-old earned his first two Super Bowl rings during his stint with the Giants that ran from 1979 through the 1990 season. He reportedly isn't all that fond of Mara or fellow Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, but Belichick may have to keep any options open if he stays unemployed through this winter.

Esiason theorized that Belichick would prefer a Giants homecoming over joining a club such as the Atlanta Falcons, who hired Raheem Morris. Regardless of Belichick's true intentions following his departure from the New England Patriots, it's clear whispers linking him with the Giants won't quiet down unless Daboll produces a winning season in 2024.
