Former All-Pro CB has one big reason he doesn't think Bill Belichick is the best coach in NFL history

"Well, look at his record without Tom [Brady]. You got to win without Tom,” Samuel said during his interview with former defensive back Bryant McFadden. “One thing I learned about being great, you got to be great in different situations. It was all Tom. I was there. I saw it. It was Tom.”

On one hand, Samuel has a point.

Each of Belichick's record six Super Bowl victories came with Brady as his quarterback, while the vast majority of "The Hoodie's" regular-season and postseason wins were with Brady under center as well. Belichick, who turned 71 in April, has 298 career regular-season triumphs, which puts him just 30 behind Don Shula's all-time record of 328. He'd need at least two more campaigns to have any shot (albeit unrealistic) at passing the mark but more likely three or more years in the league to have a chance.

If the record half-dozen Super Bowl rings and 31 playoff wins aren't enough in favor of Belichick as the GOAT, his three AP Coach of the Year Awards could help the argument. Shula has the most though with four.

Having spent five years with the Patriots from 2003-07, Samuel knows more than most about the inner workings of Belichick, Brady and company. The former cornerback made his first Pro Bowl team during his final season in New England and earned his lone First-Team All-Pro honor that year as well.

Samuel also won back-to-back Super Bowl titles with the Patriots during the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Discounting the 2000 campaign when a then-rookie Brady played only one game and 2008 season where he suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Week 1, the Brady-Belichick duo combined for nine Super Bowl appearances in the other 18 years and made the playoffs every time except 2002.

In five seasons as the Cleveland Browns lead man from 1991-95, Belichick went just 36-44 and made the postseason once. The Patriots finished 5-11 in Brady's rookie campaign on the bench and 11-5 in his injury-marred season.

In the three-time MVP's three-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Belichick guided the Patriots to a combined 25-25 mark in the regular season and only one playoff appearance. New England was blown out in the AFC wild-card round during the 2021 campaign.

After leaving New England, Brady, meanwhile, went 32-18 in the regular season with the Bucs and 5-2 in the playoffs. He won his seventh championship ring in February 2021 to cap off his first year with Tampa Bay and captured his record fifth Super Bowl MVP.
