ESPN host calls out Chicago Bears for mishandling Justin Fields: 'That place is a dumpster fire'

Mike Greenberg has seen a bit of football in his time. The long-time ESPN Radio host-turned-television talking head has been talking about the NFL on the four-letter network since 1999.

He's forgotten more football than many will ever even see, which makes his criticisms carry a little more weight than those of the average Joe football fan.

In fact, criticism may be too soft of a word to describe how he went after the Chicago Bears on Thursday.  This was in the wake of quarterback Justin Fields' suggestion – that he later backpedaled on – that coaching may be one of the reasons for his struggles (being "robotic" as a quarterback) as a third-year player.

"Justin Fields may or not have been destined to be a great NFL quarterback, but he's been given absolutely no chance and if he can't say it -- because that's a quarterback's unwritten code -- someone needs to say it," Greeny said on "Get Up." "They are ruining that kid because of complete organizational incompetence. That place is a dumpster fire."

Greenberg's overarching point is that Chicago seems to be the place where talented young quarterbacks go to get beat up and lose any potential they may have had. We saw that with Mitchell Trubisky, who the Bears took with the No. 2 overall pick in 2017. He's a backup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, now, having never reached his potential in Chicago despite flashing some talent.

The same thing seems to now be happening with Fields, who the Bears selected with the 11th overall pick in 2021. Fields was an excellent college quarterback at Ohio State and a Heisman contender. He barely looks like he belongs on the football field after two weeks in 2023, though, having already thrown three interceptions compared to two touchdowns.

Sure, some of that is his own fault, but to Greeny's point, there seems to be a bigger problem in Chicago.

"I get that Justin Fields shouldn't say it, but to be completely honest with you I don't blame him. Everything they're doing is wrong and only a tiny little bit of it is his fault," Greenberg said.
