Eagles make a flurry of roster moves after losing multiple players to season-ending injuries

It’s been a chaotic week for the Philadelphia Eagles. Their tie with the Cleveland Browns was an exhausting affair and one that resulted in a flurry of injuries for the team. Two players had to be carted off the field and several more walked to the locker room. The team has made some corresponding roster moves now that the dust has settled.

The team posted this on X earlier today:

Eagles have signed DT Robert Cooper, DT Marvin Wilson, DT Caleb Sanders, LB Tyreek Maddox-Williams, and LB Quinton Bell, Waived/Injured WR Tyrie Cleveland, DT Noah Elliss, CB Zech McPhearson, and released CB Greedy Williams and P Ty Zentner.

The injuries

Zech McPhearson, Tyrie Cleveland, and Noah Ellis have all been waived/injured. Fourth-year wideout, Tyre Cleveland had a breakout game in the preseason opener, while McPhearson was viewed as the primary backup to Avonte Maddox. Losing all three players is a real shame, especially in preseason. Hopefully, they can all make a speedy recovery.

The signings

Marvin Wilson should be a name familiar to Eagles fans as he spent time with the team between 2021-2022. He recently worked out for the Dolphins and will come in to fight for a depth spot previously occupied by Noah Elliss.

Caleb Sanders was a UDFA in this year’s NFL Draft having played his college ball at South Dakota State. He had 6.5 sacks in each of his last two years there and was named the team’s top defensive player last season. He comes into Philadelphia weighing around 285 lbs and ranking 5th in SDSU history for sacks. He could be a fun project player to keep an eye on.

Finally, Tyree Maddox-Williams is a Philadelphia native who played his college ball at Rutgers where he was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team five years in a row! He ran a 4.46 40-yard-dash and brings the needed athleticism and IQ to a linebacker room that still lacks depth. TMW could be a special teams candidate if he can make an instant impact on the field in the team’s final preseason game.

The releases

The Eagles parted ways with both CB Greedy Williams and P Ty Zentner.

Greedy Williams was signed this past offseason and it was assumed that he would instantly be competing for a backup role in the secondary. Unfortunately, his summer has been quiet and he’s gotten lost in the shuffle. A lot of the young UDFA corners have risen to the challenge and left Williams out in the cold. He should catch onto another team, but this is a little disappointing, as is the release of Ty Zentner.

Zentner was brought in as direct competition to Arryn Siposs. He looked good in the opening preseason game, but wasn’t as good when given sole duties in the game against Cleveland. He still averaged close to 40 yards per punt and I’d argue looked better than Siposs, but that’s just me. The Eagles appear to be rolling with Siposs for another year, for better or worse.
