Detroit Lions’ Dan Campbell Reveals Shocking Admission
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The NFL Playoffs have provided fans with some thrilling moments, and this season saw the Detroit Lions come closer to a Super Bowl appearance than ever before. However, their hopes were dashed in the second half when they faced off against the San Francisco 49ers. While many have criticized head coach Dan Campbell for his decision to go for it on fourth down twice and fall short both times, Campbell remained steadfast in defending those calls, citing their aggressive approach throughout the season.

Instead, he acknowledged a critical mistake he made during the Lions’ final drive.

Campbell, despite standing by his aggressive play-calling on fourth downs, admitted that his error on the last drive had costly consequences. His decision to run the ball on third and goal led to a timeout being used, forcing the Lions into a position where they needed an onside kick to have any chance of winning. Had they preserved that timeout, they might have had additional opportunities to regain possession with all three timeouts intact.

Reflecting on this decision, Campbell described it as a gamble, and in hindsight, he acknowledged it was probably the wrong call. He believed they should have thrown the ball four times instead, avoiding the need to sacrifice any timeouts.

“The easy thing to do is to throw it. Probably should’ve been the right thing, but for me, I wanted to run it. I thought we would just pop it. We had just — 2-minute all the way down the field, throwing the football and they were in a four-down front and I believed we’d walk right in, and we just missed a block. So then, yeah, I’ve got to use a timeout. So, hindsight, throw it four times. But I believed in that moment it was going to be a walk-in run. And it didn’t work out. So, I gambled and lost.”

Despite the disappointing outcome, Dan Campbell delivered a motivating message to his team after the game, emphasizing that this was their opportunity to shine.

He noted that other teams now recognize the Lions as a formidable force and won’t be caught off guard. With Jared Goff delivering strong performances and a roster boasting young talents like Sam LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Amon Ra St. Brown, the Lions are poised to become a dominant team for years to come.

The lessons learned from this game, both for the players and coaching staff, will serve as valuable experiences for the future. The Lions, under Campbell’s leadership, are set to be a compelling story in the NFL for years to come.

Regardless of any criticisms aimed at the coach, one thing remains evident: the team’s heart and fighting spirit are exceptional.
