Denver Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II to Get New Coach As Christian Parker Leaves
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Surtain II is one of the few good things Denver Broncos fans had to cheer about during what was a forgettable 2023 season. The corner quickly established himself as one of the league’s best ball hawks who could contribute to winning games if his team’s offense bothered to show up.

However, things might go differently in 2024. Aside from rumors that tip him playing elsewhere, the Broncos’ coaching staff is also experiencing changes. The staffing change that would directly his performance is the departure of his long-time position coach.

Denver Broncos to find new defensive backs coach after Christian Parker’s departure

Christian Parker has been the Denver Broncos’ defensive backs coach ever since Patrick Surtain II was drafted ninth overall in 2021. His guidance helped Surtain II make an easier transition to the pros, and his two Pro Bowl and one First Team All-Pro honors are a testament to their productive partnership.

It seemed like their time together was ending as Parker interviewed for multiple defensive coordinator positions once the offseason started. His work with Surtain helped him build a strong case as he looked to forward his career.

However, Denver Sports’ Andrew Mason reported that the teams he interviewed for decided to look elsewhere:

The Patriots opted for an internal promotion, moving DeMarcus Covington up from his role as defensive-line coach. Green Bay hired former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley for its coordinator role. That choice was a mild surprise, as the Packers had familiarity with Parker from two seasons on their staff — under head coach Matt LaFleur — before Parker joined Fangio’s Broncos staff in 2021.

Still, Parker decided to leave to his former boss Vic Fangio with the Philadelphia Eagles. While the opportunity to lead a Super Bowl contender back to fighting shape is an intriguing project, many are still puzzled to see Parker leave for a job that isn’t a defensive coordinator position.

Patrick Surtain II will probably still do a good job despite his coach’s sudden departure. He finished 2023 with a pick, 12 pass deflections, and 59 solo tackles. He can only hope that the next defensive backs coach the Denver Broncos hire would help him keep his numbers going.
