Dean Lowry is a veteran cut candidate for the Packers

The Green Bay Packers seem to be set on the interior of their defensive line. Two-time Pro Bowl DT Kenny Clark is the anchor of this unit. The team drafted talented Georgia DT Devonte Wyatt in the first round of April's NFL Draft. They signed free agent DT Jarran Reed in free agency (career-high in sacks is 10.5). Second-year DT T.J. Slaton is a big run-stuffer that has a lot of potential. The emergence of those four player is why veteran DT Dean Lowry is a prime cut candidate heading into training camp in late July.

Lowry has a lot of experience. He is going into his seventh season in Green Bay after being drafted in the fourth round in 2016 out of Northwestern. However, he has not produced as well as he and the Packers would have liked so far. No. 94 is coming off a career-high season in terms of sacks (5), QB hits (9), and tipped passes (4). It is great that he had his best year yet for a top 10 Green Bay defense. But his best just hasn't been good enough. Once in a while, he will come up with a big sack on third down or he'll recover a fumble. But he has just one forced fumble in 96 career games. He has just 15 career sacks. He has just 29 QB hits in that same span, as well. New free agent acquisition Jarran Reed has a whopping 70 career QB hits in just 89 career games. The Illinois native in Lowry has not produced enough.

Now, the Packers could keep him on for another year for depth and experience purposes. But, it is a very crowded interior. If the team were to cut him this offseason, they would save roughly $8M in cap space. Unless the former Wildcat has a massive season after somehow being kept on the final 53-man roster, his days on Lombardi Avenue could very well be numbered.
