Cowboys Rookie CB Eric Scott Jr.; My ‘Story Isn’t Done!’

Rookie cornerback Eric Scott Jr. has walked a long and winding road throughout his journey to the Dallas Cowboys.

Scott began his college career at Northern Illinois, but transferred to Butler Community College after just one year as a backup. He then transferred again to Southern Mississippi, where he had 60 tackles, 16 passes defended and five interceptions in three seasons. 

Scott continued to face doubts as he entered the 2023 NFL Draft, but the Cowboys believed in him enough to take him in the sixth round. Not just that, they traded up to get him in a clear show of faith. 

Now that he has arrived in Dallas, Scott has one goal in mind: get out there and prove himself.

"Sit back and watch, the story is not done," Scott told DallasCowboys.com.

So far, Scott seems to be impressing throughout offseason workouts. The rookie has even taken some snaps with the first-team defense as the Cowboys' secondary misses some key players. To Scott, though, he was more than ready to step in when needed.

"It's my job right now," Scott said. "Like, if somebody goes down, I have to step up and fill those big shoes," Scott said. "That's the name of the game, next man up, so I'm always ready. I'm ready for ready."

Scott's performance throughout the offseason has even caught the attention of his defensive coordinator, Dan Quinn. Quinn says he intentionally took out some key players like Trevon Diggs and Stephon Gilmore to see what the Rookies can do alongside other starters. So far, Scott has passed this test from his coach.

"Attitude is really what it takes for young players to assert themselves into these moments because that responsibility is real, to say, 'Hey man, can we count on you when it's there?' and them learning to do that early on," Quinn said. "That's a big deal to say, 'I'm down for this count. You can count on me to get it done,' and I've seen that from Eric so far.

"He's just one of those guys, 'I'm not leaving. I'm going to do my thing.'"

Scott has overcome many obstacles throughout his career, and as a rookie sixth-round pick, he still has a ways to go to secure a roster spot. If he keeps up his strong performance, though, he's in great shape to keep writing his story in Dallas.
