Ridiculous Idea: Cowboys Trading Gallup?
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Even after the struggles in the passing game last season, there is a new narrative that the Dallas Cowboys should break up their potential three-headed monster at receiver and trade away Michael Gallup.

We know exactly what you are thinking: What, why?! The Cowboys were bereft of playmakers a season ago, and they hope to have solved that issue with the addition of Brandin Cooks this offseason. ... giving Dak Prescott a full arsenal of weapons at wideout.

Yet, Bleacher Report is suggesting that instead of giving Gallup a season to find the form that netted him a five-year $57.5 contract, they should go ahead and throw in the towel.

"Since Dallas now has [Cooks and Jalen Tolbert] to serve as a second or third target behind CeeDee Lamb, Gallup is even more expendable," Bleacher Report writes. His contract is also team-friendly as he's signed through 2026, but it also includes a potential out after this season, increasing his value on the market."

Our Mike Fisher outlines some of the issues with this take in the video below. To wit ...

1 - Moving on from Gallup and his $57.5 million contract would seem on the surface to be cap-helpful. But the dead money involved makes it impractical. Additionally, we're not sure where B/R gets the idea that "his contract is team-friendly''; starting next year, there are three seasons with his cap number at about $15 million each.

2 - The price tag is one of the very reasons another team would not be highly interested in Gallup right now. Which team out there is dying to add a $13 million WR3?

3 - What about the injury thing? Gallup has let it be known in recent interviews that despite being physically recovered from his ACL injury in 2022, he wasn't mentally

So what about now? By all indications, the 27-year-old seems to have his confidence back and is ready to try and get back to where he was in the years prior to his injury. If that's true, the Cowboys will enjoy the value. But until it's proven to be true? Michael Gallup's trade value at this moment is remarkably low ... meaning that in addition to being important to Dallas' plans, there is far too little to be gained by trying to deal him.
