Clay Matthews officially retires, stating; 'My playing days are over'

During that promotional tour, he decided to finally reveal his intentions to never go back on the field. 

On Tuesday, he said to Packers Wire, “My playing days are over!”

Matthews has been pro linebacker for 11 seasons. Ten of the seasons he played for Green Bay Packers, while his last season was with Los Angeles Rams, dedicated to his hometown. Matthews says he hoped to end his career while playing with Green Bay Packers. 

He built humongous records throughout his playing career. 2018 was the last season for him with the Packers, as he went on and signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams. Even though he was not the prime Matthews, he still gave some tough competition with eight sacks in 13 games for the Rams in 2019. 

The Rams ended his contract after a year, which came as a shock to Matthews. He admitted, “I was shocked. I thought I had a strong year.” Matthews also revealed that he got many offers in 2020 but had to field them off because, due to the Pandemic, he was forced to move back to his native, Southern California. 

“We also had our third child, and it was all in the middle of COVID, so there were a lot of unknowns. I wanted to focus on the next chapter of life, which is being a dad and being at home for a lot more.”, Matthews said in the interview.

Matthews mentions that he enjoyed watching the game for three long years by sitting on the couch. 

Matthews will undoubtedly be inducted into the Green Bay Packer’s Hall of Fame, which has always been his dream while starting his career as a Bowler.
