Chiefs' Chris Jones opens up on impact of new contract

The Kansas City Chiefs signed defensive lineman Chris Jones to a contract before he hit free agency.

A massive contract.

Jones landed a five-year, $158.75 million deal, which is the type of contract the Chiefs typically avoid. It just goes to show how much they value the superstar.

But could that amount of money potentially alter Jones’ effort level?

He says absolutely not.

“I just chase greatness. I don’t think that’ll change,” Jones said, via Jesse Newell of The Kansas City Star. “No amount of money can change my love and passion for the game of football. No matter how successful I’ll be, I’m always chasing greater heights. So I think the Chiefs understand and see my perspective of the game and how much I love the game of football.”

It was pretty clear that Jones wanted to return to Kansas City all along, and it was equally obvious that the feeling was mutual on the Chiefs’ part.

That was why Kansas City slapped a franchise tag on cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, who is expected to be traded at some point this offseason.

Jones, who played his collegiate football at Mississippi State, was selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He has made five straight trips to the Pro Bowl dating back to 2019, and based on the fact that he racked up 15.5 sacks in 2018, it should be six.

Jones has also notched First-Team All-Pro honors in back-to-back years, and, most importantly, he has helped lead Kansas City to three Super Bowl championships.

That includes this past season, when Jones registered 30 tackles and 10.5 sacks.

At this point, it seems fairly safe to say that Chris Jones will be a Chief for life.
