Chargers take son of Hall of Famer in new mock draft

Could Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr. fall to the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL Draft?

In his post-combine mock draft, Kyle Stackpole of CBS Sports predicted the Chargers would take the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Sr. with the fifth overall pick.

"Best-case scenario for the Chargers, who get Justin Herbert one of the best wide receiver prospects in recent years," wrote Stackpole. "Jim Harbaugh has seen up close just how good Marvin Harrison Jr. is, and now he'll get to coach the Ohio State standout instead of going against him."

During a recent episode of "The Athletic Football Show," Dianna Russini said a general manager told her the first four picks in the NFL Draft would be quarterbacks. The class is rich at the position. Southern California's Caleb Williams, LSU's Jayden Daniels, North Carolina's Drake Maye, and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy head the list.

The run on QBs could create a domino effect, where Harrison Jr. ends up in L.A. This would be great for the Chargers.

In three seasons at Ohio State, the 21-year-old finished with the fifth-most receptions (155), fourth-most receiving yards (2,613) and the third-most receiving TDs (31) in program history. He also earned two All-American nods and won the 2023 Biletnikoff Award. NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein's comp for Harrison Jr. is Dallas Cowboys star CeeDee Lamb.

Aside from six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen, the Chargers are thin at WR. Mike Williams suffered a season-ending ACL tear in 2023, and ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported many in league circles wonder whether the team will release him. Quentin Johnston — the 21st pick of the 2023 NFL Draft — underwhelmed in his rookie season, logging two receiving TDs in 17 games.

To become a Super Bowl contender, the Chargers need Herbert to play at an MVP level. Drafting an elite WR prospect would help the star quarterback elevate his game.
