CBS reportedly tried 'intervention' with Tony Romo

It appears individuals within CBS management noticed fan complaints about lead NFL analyst Tony Romo.

Per Alex Reimer of Audacy, New York Post sports media columnist Andrew Marchand said on the latest edition of "The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast" that CBS approached Romo about some questionable on-air performances following the 2021 campaign.

"Tony Romo needs to study more. He needs to be better prepared. As you move away from the sidelines, you need to do more work," Marchand explained. "I know CBS is aware of this. They tried an intervention last offseason. They knew, they anticipated this. That’s a credit to them, the people in charge there. But it has not gotten better."

For a piece published on Jan. 24, the Barrett Sports Media website mentioned that host Ken Carman of Cleveland radio station 92.3 The Fan questioned the amount of prep time Romo put in on a weekly basis. Reimer pointed out that Romo seemed to not know this past Sunday that members of the Cincinnati Bengals previously referred to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium as "Burrowhead," a reference to Cincinnati star quarterback Joe Burrow.

Romo and CBS agreed to a 10-year contract back in 2020 that reportedly pays the retired quarterback $17.5 million per season. Since that time, Fox's Greg Olsen has surpassed Romo as the top network NFL analyst in the eyes of many fans.

"I actually spent Sunday in Philadelphia behind the scenes with that whole crew," Sports Business Journal's John Ourand noted about this past Sunday's NFC Championship Game. "What I can tell you is that … what Romo had a couple of years ago, Olsen seems to have right now."

Such stories will likely continue to generate headlines throughout the winter and springtime months with Tom Brady preparing to become Fox's new lead NFL analyst perhaps as soon as later this year unless he spends one season away from football following his retirement which he announced on Wednesday.
