Cam Newton reveals list of quarterbacks he'd consider backing up

On Wednesday, former league MVP Cam Newton reiterated that there aren't 32 quarterbacks better than him but also stated that he's "willing" to serve as a backup. The offer, however, is only extended to a handful of teams.

In a nearly 18-minute long YouTube video he uploaded titled "Backup..," Newton provided a list of 12 current and future NFL quarterbacks he'd consider playing behind this season.

Cleveland's Deshaun Watson headlines Newton's list, followed by the team Baltimore's Lamar Jackson plays for next season. Chicago's Justin Fields, Miami's Tua Tagovailoa, and Tennessee's Malik Willis (a backup himself) made the cut.

Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts, soon-to-be Jet Aaron Rodgers, Buffalo's Josh Allen and Washington's Sam Howell rounded out the names of current NFL quarterbacks Newton mentioned.

Additionally, Newton said he'd relish mentoring incoming rookies C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson as "there's a lot that goes into the most important position in all of sports." Newton believes he can help shape any of the three into leaders of their eventual team.

Last month, the 33-year-old participated at Auburn's Pro Day to "bring awareness" of how he can still be of service, though he says he hasn't heard from any teams.

Newton last played in the NFL during the 2021-22 season when he rejoined the Carolina Panthers, who drafted him first overall in 2011.

In eight games, he threw for 684 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing for 230 yards and five touchdowns.

In 11 seasons, Newton recorded 32,382 passing yards and 194 passing touchdowns. Among all quarterbacks in NFL history, he ranks first in rushing touchdowns (75) and second in rushing yards (5,628).

At his peak, Newton was one of the league's most dynamic talents. However, despite his belief that he can still be a capable starter, he has limitations due to his age and injury history.

Still, with his experience, leadership and charisma, Newton could be a tremendous mentor for a young quarterback if he's genuinely willing to take a backup role.

Carolina holds the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and is expected to select a quarterback. Having already mentioned his openness to working with any of the top prospects, owner David Tepper should consider reaching out to the former face of the franchise.
