Buccaneers sign WR Chris Godwin to three-year, $60M deal

Chris Godwin couldn't resist running it back with Tom Brady.

Godwin agreed to a new three-year deal with the Bucs on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal is reportedly worth $60 million with $40 million guaranteed.

The agreement comes after Tampa Bay franchise tagged Godwin last week in hopes the two parties could iron out a long-term extension. That came to fruition Wednesday, and it likely became a much easier negotiation for the Bucs when Brady announced he was un-retiring over the weekend.

Brady will be happy to return with one of his most consistent weapons remaining in the fold, as Godwin and Mike Evans offer him an elite receiver duo. Tampa Bay also signed Russell Gage to a contract earlier this week, and longtime Brady associate Rob Gronkowski expressed optimism that he'll return to the team.

Godwin has played his entire NFL career with the Bucs since being selected in the third round out of Penn State in 2017. He burst onto the scene in his third year, when he was named to his first Pro Bowl after reeling in nine touchdown catches, which remains his career high.

With Brady under center, Godwin has remained at a high level while becoming a more dependable, if not less explosive, option. His average yards per reception has gone down, but he's hauled in more of his targets. He logged 64 catches for 840 yards in 2020 to help lead the Bucs to a Super Bowl win, and improved his numbers to 98 catches for 1,103 yards last season.
