Broncos insider reveals most likely interim HC if Nathaniel Hackett is fired

With a 3-7 record and an offense that ranks last in the NFL in scoring (14.7 points per game), first-year Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett may be running out of leeway in Denver.

There has been plenty of speculation regarding how much longer Hackett has before Denver decides to cut its losses and move on, and Broncos insider Benjamin Albright of KOA Colorado believes if that happens, a former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator could be targeted as his replacement.

A former head coach with the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans, Dom Capers joined the Broncos staff this year as a senior defensive assistant. He’s held that same title since 2019 during stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions.

He also has 16 years of experience as a defensive coordinator with the Packers, Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins, winning a Super Bowl with Green Bay in 2010-11.

Capers has a 48-80 career record over eight seasons as a head coach with just one winning season. He was named the Associated Press Head Coach of the Year in 1996 with the Panthers following a 12-4 season.

In Hackett’s first year in Denver, the team released former leading rusher Melvin Gordon, Russell Wilson has regressed to a below-average quarterback and six of the Broncos' seven losses have come in one-score games.
