Brandin Cooks on new injury: If I’m out there, there’s no limitations
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys veteran wideout Brandin Cooks popped up on the injury report Wednesday, hampered by a knee injury.

Cooks, 29, was listed as DNP, though the Cowboys didn’t hold an official practice. Head coach Mike McCarthy said he’s “got a chance” to play in Week 2 against the New York Jets Sunday. Cooks commented on his ailment after practice, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“I’m just working, and we’ll see where we’re at. I feel good,” Cooks said.

Cooks said he wouldn’t be limited if he suits up against the Jets.

“Nah. If I’m out there, there’s no limitations,” Cooks said.

Acquired in the offseason from the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round and 2024 sixth-round pick, Cooks made his Cowboys debut in the 40-0 Week 1 victory over the New York Giants. Cooks came down with two receptions for 22 yards.

The former Oregon State star came into the NFL after being selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft (20th overall), by the New Orleans Saints. Since, he’s been a reliable receiver who’s been looking for a permanent home in the league.

Before being traded by the Texans to the Cowboys, Cooks spent time with the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams. Over the course of his NFL career, he’s amassed 632 receptions for 8,638 yards and 49 touchdowns.

Brandin Cooks joins Cowboys veterans on injury report

Cooks joined left tackle Tyron Smith (ankle), guard Tyler Smith (hamstring) and safety Donovan Wilson (calf) on the injury report. Wilson and Tyler Smith were listed as DNPs, while Tyron Smith was listed as a full participant.

As for Wilson and Tyler Smith, who each didn’t suit up in Week 1, McCarthy said that Wilson is further along at the moment than Smith.

“I know Dono had a big workout today,” McCarthy said. “I know Tyler is doing really well. He’s pushing to play. [On Thursday], hopefully we can get them involved. I know Dono is a little further ahead than Tyler right now. They’ll both work with the rehab group today.”

Wilson started every game in 2022, recording 101 tackles (77 solo), 5.0 sacks and two forced fumbles. An MRI confirmed last week that Smith, the 2022 first-round pick out of Tulsa, suffered a hamstring strain. He started all 17 games as a rookie, performing admirably. The 22-year-old earned a 71.4 overall grade and allowed six sacks in 1,144 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.
