Bill Belichick shaving head for charity elicits funny reaction
David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Bill Belichick got his head shaved for charity this week, and his new, clean-cut hairdo elicited an amusing reaction from New England Patriots two-time Pro Bowl safety Devin McCourty.

Belichick on Thursday participated in Granite Telecommunications’ “Saving by Shaving,” an annual charitable event that benefits Boston Children’s Hospital. The Patriots shared video on social media of the head coach having his scalp shorn by Patriots linebacker Brandon King.

“Tough job trying to make me look good now,” Belichick jokingly quipped. “It’s not easy. There used to be more to cut off.”

In the Instagram post in which the Patriots shared footage of Belichick’s time in the barber’s chair, McCourty offered up the following witticism concerning how the coach should have shaved his head even closer to the scalp so he could join the Patriots’ so-called “Bald Gang.”

“@_king205 (King) tell Bill it’s time join the Bald Gang @dharm26 (Duron Harmon)  @rbrex34 (Rex Burkhead), @mccourtytwins (Jason McCourty) Slate (Matthew Slater)…we got @thatlguy (Lawrence Guy) and @sweetfeet (James White) joining the class of 2021 BALD GANG. Dmac,” McCourty wrote in the comments section of the Instagram dispatch.

The Patriots head coach has long been a huge supporter of charitable causes in the New England region and beyond, including his own eponymously named Bill Belichick Foundation.

Belichick of course has long cultivated the appearance of having a gruff persona and a football-only, no-nonsense approach to coaching, which also extends to his patented terse interactions with the media over the years.

That being said, there have been numerous examples over the years of the iconic head coach playing against type. In fact, Cam Newton, who signed a one-year deal Friday to return to New England next season offered up this provocative observation about Belichick just last month.

The head-shaving event on Thursday simply is another example of Belichick altering the longstanding narrative surrounding him, not to mention raising awareness of a worthwhile charity.
