Baltimore Ravens corner Trayvon Mullen to have season-ending surgery

The Baltimore Ravens caught a bit of bad injury luck in training camp this week. On Tuesday, head coach John Harbaugh announced cornerback Trayvon Mullen would be undergoing season-ending surgery.

Mullen injured a toe and the prognosis has turned to be quite poor for both the player and team. Mullen had come to Baltimore in free agency on a one-year deal for 2023.

After originally getting drafted out of Clemson by the then-Oakland Raiders in the 2nd round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Mullen lasted three seasons with the Raiders. He played for the Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys in 2022 before signing with the Ravens ahead of this season.

Mullen has four career interceptions, all coming during his time with the Raiders. He flashed plenty of upside in his second season in 2020 when he played all 16 games and had 14 passes defensed and a two of his interceptions.

But since, Mullen has been a journeyman and was looking to make a statement on his short-term deal in Baltimore. That has, however, come undone.

At Clemson, Mullen was part of a pair of national championship teams, starting at corner in 2018 for the second title-winning team.

As cornerback depth slips, the Ravens could be adding to the pass rush

NFL free agent Jadeveon Clowney could be leaving on AFC North team for another. Per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, the veteran defensive end visited the Ravens on Tuesday.

Clowney, a nine-year veteran of the league, spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

The three-time Pro Bowl selection is still available heading into the 2023 season and could be a nice asset for a team looking to content for a Super Bowl. Baltimore would fit that category.

Clowney spent the first five seasons with the Houston Texans (2014-18) prior to short stops with the Seattle Seahawks (2019) and Tennessee Titans (2020).

The news of Clowney’s visit to Baltimore comes as the NFL prepares for its first big week in the preseason. A total of 16 games will be played between Thursday, Aug. 10 and Sunday, Aug. 13. Baltimore begins preseason action against the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday.
