Alabama Crimson Tide Legend Has Passed Away At 79

Former Alabama Crimson Tide All-American quarterback, coach, and athletic director, Steve Sloan, passed away at the age of 79.

Sloan, renowned for his exceptional contributions to college football, clinched two national championships with the Crimson Tide before embarking on a coaching career that spanned several esteemed college football programs.

Alabama expressed its heartfelt tribute to Sloan through social media channels.

“Student-Athlete. Coach. Athletics. Director. Legend. Alabama mourns the passing of All-American Steve Sloan and sends its thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.”

Beginning his tenure at Alabama as Joe Namath’s backup in 1963, Sloan’s prowess was evident early on. His standout performance earned him the prestigious Sammy Baugh Trophy in 1965, a year in which he played a pivotal role in securing Paul “Bear” Bryant’s team its second consecutive national title. Sloan’s remarkable achievement was underscored by his NCAA-leading 9.1 yards per pass attempt.

Sloan’s college career culminated in a remarkable display of skill, as he was crowned MVP in a triumphant 39-28 victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

Selected in the 11th round of the draft by the Atlanta Falcons, Sloan briefly graced the professional football arena, starting one game in 1967, before returning to Alabama to serve as an assistant coach. His coaching journey continued with stints as offensive coordinator at Florida State and Georgia Tech, followed by a notable 14-year tenure as head coach at four different institutions.

Throughout his coaching career, Sloan amassed a record of 68-86-3, leaving an indelible mark at Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, and Duke. Notable achievements included guiding Texas Tech to 10 victories in 1976 and steering teams to three bowl game appearances.

In 1987, Sloan returned to the Alabama Crimson Tide, this time assuming the role of athletic director for three years. His leadership extended beyond Alabama, as he held similar positions at North Texas, Central Florida, and Chattanooga.
