The 49ers were thin at the position after losing Talanoa Hufanga and George Odum to injuries. Hufanga suffered a season-ending ACL injury on November 19, while Odum sustained a torn biceps on November 23.
The New England Patriots made Ryan (5-11, 195) a third-round selection (No. 83 overall) out of Rutgers in 2013. Last season with the Buccaneers, he recorded 37 tackles, a tackle for a loss, an interception, three passes defensed, and a fumble recovery through nine games, including six starts, per Pro Football Reference.
Ryan has racked up 742 tackles, 19 tackles for a loss, 26 quarterback hits, 19 interceptions, a touchdown, 98 passes defensed, 15 forced fumbles, and 13 sacks through his 10 NFL seasons. He has appeared in 149 games, starting 121, throughout his career. Ryan also spent time with the Tennessee Titans.
