49ers Reveal Chances They Will Sign Tight End Zach Ertz

Anyone who watched the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon dismantle the Philadelphia Eagles could see that they are in a good place when it comes to their roster. But, they aren’t going to rest on their laurels after one game. If there is an opportunity to upgrade their roster, they will explore it.

One of the most high-profile players available on free agency right now is veteran tight end, Zach Ertz. Ertz requested and was granted his release from the Arizona Cardinals last week as he was hoping to land with a team that would give him a chance to win another Super Bowl ring.

The 49ers are one team that would certainly qualify. However, it doesn’t sound like the chances of them adding the three-time Pro Bowler to the mix are very high. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke about Ertz in a press conference with reporters earlier this week.

“I know [general manager] John [Lynch] looks into all that stuff. I haven’t heard anything about it now, so I wouldn’t think so at this time,” Shanahan told reporters on Monday.

“But, I have a lot of respect for him as a player. I’ve always been a fan,” Shanahan added regarding Ertz. “But right now, at least from my standpoint, we’re good with our group, but we have injuries and things change so we’ll look into all options as always.” (H/T Heavy)

The 49ers have one of the best tight ends in the business in George Kittle atop their depth chart. But, the depth behind him is a bit concerning, especially after backup Ross Dwelley is going to be sidelined for multiple weeks with a high ankle sprain.

However, the door was not fully shut on bringing Ertz in according to Ron Kroichick of the San Francisco Chronicle. Shanahan kept open the possibility when speaking about Dwelley and confirming that he would be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

49ers Sports Talk on X, formerly known as Twitter, reported that San Francisco is in talks with Ertz as well. But, they aren’t the only team vying for him as the competition is fierce to sign him.

In addition to the 49ers, his former team in the Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs are considered the main contenders. That is the foursome many people would say are the favorites for the Super Bowl right now, it makes sense all of them are at least checking in on Ertz.
