49ers GM 'incredibly encouraged' by QB's recovery from elbow injury

49ers general manager John Lynch implied quarterback Brock Purdy could be back in action soon after an impressive first throwing session since having surgery on the UCL in his right elbow.

"He's had one session thus far, and we're incredibly encouraged by that," Lynch said Wednesday on SiriusXM radio, per Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. "He's hitting all his marks, and that doesn't surprise us because he's putting in all the work."

Purdy tore his UCL against the Eagles in the NFC championship game and underwent surgery on March 10. If the 23-year-old keeps progressing, he should be ready for training camp.

Nick Wagoner of ESPN reported QBs Trey Lance and Sam Darnold will continue to split first-team reps during OTAs. It's just a precaution, however.

"Brock Purdy should be around 100 percent right before the start of the season, barring any setbacks," NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport said Tuesday on "The Pat McAfee Show."

Purdy, the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, proved he was the biggest steal. After Jimmy Garoppolo broke his foot in Week 13 against Miami, Purdy replaced him and prevented a late-season collapse. In eight starts, Purdy went 7-1, threw 16 TDs, completed 66.8 percent of his passes, logged a 111.4 passer rating and carried San Francisco to a second consecutive conference championship.

Purdy could be the franchise's future, so his fast recovery is tremendous for the 49ers. They hope he captures their sixth Super Bowl title, which has eluded the franchise for 28 years.
