Watch: Mavs' Luka Doncic, Tim Hardaway Jr. Frustrated with Jason Kidd Not Calling Timeout
USA TODAY Sports

Sometimes, in the heat of battle, things aren't pretty, and that was the case for the Dallas Mavericks as they came back from down 16 to defeat the Orlando Magic on Monday night.

With 17 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Mavs were holding onto a 127-124 lead when the ball was inbounded to Tim Hardaway Jr. After getting caught up in a double-team from Orlando, Hardaway picked up his pivot foot and was called for a travel, giving the Magic the ball back where they cut the lead to one point.

Both Hardaway and Luka Doncic were visibly frustrated with head coach Jason Kidd and his staff for not calling a timeout before the traveling violation was called. The Mavs had two timeouts, and as soon as Hardaway was doubled, it would've made sense to take one of the timeouts immediately to advance the ball to mid-court and not risk turning the ball over.

Fortunately for Kidd, things worked out, as Doncic hit four clutch free throws in the final 10 seconds to secure the Mavs' 131-129 win over the Magic. Doncic finished with 45 points, nine rebounds and 15 assists while shooting 12-23 overall, 3-8 from deep and 18-21 from the charity stripe.

"Oh man ... yeah, I was expecting [Coach Kidd to call the timeout], especially getting trapped" Hardaway said. "I mean, I knew we had some timeouts, but I think in that position, he trusts me as a player, a veteran to know the situation and call the timeout on trap if I don't see anything. I put that on me. Just have to execute it better. He trusts me in that scenario, so I've gotta be better."

Like Doncic, Hardaway also had a terrific game, finishing with 36 points and eight rebounds while shooting 11-17 overall and 5-9 from deep. The Mavs will now start a brutal three-game stretch against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers.
