Utah Jazz Reveal Heartbreaking Health Battle That GM Justin Zanik Is Battling

Along with the Utah Jazz’ mediocre performance this season, there are other battles the franchise is battling off the court. Chief among them is general manager Justin Zanik’s fight to stay alive, amidst a kidney disease ravaging his body.

According to the franchise, Zanik has been suffering from a polycystic kidney disease, which is basically a genetic disorder affecting the organ’s function. The Jazz general manager is set to receive a kidney transplant to resolve the health issue he’s dealing with.

The franchise also sent its love and support to Zanik, his wife Gina, and their family as the general manager is about to undergo the said procedure. The statement also added that he is an instrumental part of the organization and they are looking forward to his return in the coming weeks.

Zanik formally joined the Jazz as its general manager back in 2018. His current stint as the franchise’s GM is his second stint in the front office. Meanwhile, Zanik’s family has also released a statement regarding Justin’s health status.

“The love we have felt and continue to feel is immeasurable. We are humbled and grateful to all of the donors that signed up to donate on Justin’s behalf. Justin looks forward to getting back to work in the coming weeks, and greatly appreciates the organization’s continued support during this process. To our families and our friends, thank you for your continued love, support, and prayers,” the statement said.

Justin Zanik’s History As the Utah Jazz’ General Manager

Zanik’s stint in Utah’s front office came around a time of big moves for the franchise. The first big trade he made was signing point guard Mike Conley in exchange of Bojan Bogdanovic in the summer of 2019.

From there, Zanik assumed the role of general manager when Dennis Lindsey was promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations. He then helped facilitate new contracts for the players and attempted to build a roster good enough to contend in the Western Conference.

Unfortunately, the Jazz constantly hit speed bumps along the way, forcing the franchise to trade two of its biggest stars – All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell and defensive ace Rudy Gobert. Since then, the team has been trying to rebuild a roster that can challenge powerhouse teams in the West.

Zanik’s battle with his kidney diseases has caused the general manager to focus on his health first than managing the Jazz. Hopefully, he can pull through and recover in the fastest time possible.
