The Philadelphia 76ers kept their season alive on Tuesday night with a 112-106 overtime win against the New York Knicks in Game 5 of their first-round series. It was a wild ending that saw Tyrese Maxey come up with one of the best performances of his career as he led the Sixers to an improbable comeback victory in Madison Square Garden.
It was reported after the game, however, that head coach Nick Nurse sustained a hand injury during the game — one that could significantly affect his coaching ability moving forward.
Philadelphia 76ers News: Nick Nurse Suffers Concerning Finger Injury in Game 5
Knicks reporter Ian Begley of SNY reported shortly after the final buzzer that Nurse may have broken his finger in the first half of Tuesday’s testy encounter:
SNY sources: Sixers coach Nick Nurse injured his finger when he slammed his hand in frustration on a call during Sixers’ Game 5 win at MSG. Unclear if it is a break or sprain. Nurse couldn’t draw plays up in the second half because he couldn’t grip a marker.

The bad news for the Sixers here is that the injury is on Nurse’s dominant right hand, which is why he could not draw up plays in the latter part of the game. Depending on the severity of the injury, this could possibly impact Nurse’s ability to coach his team in Game 6 and possibly beyond.
Maxey didn’t need too many plays drawn up for him in this one, though, especially during the end of the fourth quarter. The All-Star guard scored seven straight points for Philly in the final 28.9 seconds of regulation to force overtime. This included an insane logo three with 8.1 seconds remaining on the clock.
Maxey saved the day for the Sixers, no doubt. And they now live to fight another day.
