Pelicans to part ways with veteran guard Isaiah Thomas

The New Orleans Pelicans won’t re-sign veteran point guard Isaiah Thomas following the expiration of his 10-day contract, according to Andrew Lopez of ESPN.

Thomas played for the first time in more than year upon signing with the Pelicans, appearing in three games ad averaging 7.7 points off the bench. The Pelicans were appreciative of Thomas’ leadership and positive approach while with the team, Lopez noted.

Thomas, 31, was traded by the Washington Wizards to the Los Angeles Clippers in February 2020, then waived shortly thereafter. He has also spent time with the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns.

The Pelicans “have two weeks before needing to sign another player” to either a 10-day or standard contract, Lopez wrote. “Because of luxury tax reasons, the Pelicans could wait the full two weeks before adding someone.”

Thomas led the Eastern Conference in scoring at 28.9 points per game in 2017, then was traded to the Cavs as part of the Kyrie Irving deal in the offseason.
