Knicks are Reportedly Fielding Offers for Quentin Grimes; Should Hawks be Interested?
USA TODAY Sports

The New York Knicks have been the only team in the NBA to make a major trade so far when they traded for Raptors forward OG Anunoby, which has been beneficial to them. They have still been in trade rumors though and might be on the verge of making more moves.

According to Fred Katz, Knicks Beat Writer at The Athletics, "The Knicks are actively fielding offers for the former first-round pick, according to rival executives who have been in contact with New York’s front office."

More from Katz:

"The 23-year-old has fallen out of favor with head coach Tom Thibodeau of late, losing the starting shooting guard job to Donte DiVincenzo on Dec. 8 and seeing his playing time decrease from 30 minutes a game in 2022-23 to 17 since moving to the second unit."

The Atlanta Hawks have been a team that has been in the trade rumors for most of the season. They are a disappointing 16-23 and the only players they have made untouchable according to reports is point guard Trae Young and emerging forward Jalen Johnson:

In a recent report, Yahoo Sports Jake Fischer said that everyone except point guard Trae Young and forward Jalen Johnson was tradable in Atlanta:

"The Hawks are certainly open for business, with plenty of long-term deals to be moved. Of late, Atlanta has informed numerous teams the only untouchable players on the Hawks’ roster are Young and rising third-year forward Jalen Johnson, sources said. Just watch Johnson’s behind-the-back dribble and flush in transition against Oklahoma City on Wednesday, or his pacing, passing and shooting ability at his size, and you’ll understand why Hawks figures are so bullish on the 22-year-old’s upside at a broad and bouncy 6-9.

Katz says that the Knicks are looking for extra ball handlers for when Jalen Brunson goes to the bench and one guy he does mention is Bogdan Bogdanovic. Bogdanovic is having a tremendous season in Atlanta and is firmly in the mix for the 6th man of the year award.

If the Hawks really are looking to reshape their roster ahead of the deadline, Grimes is a young player who makes sense. He would be a good complement to Trae Young. The biggest strengths for Grimes are his defense and his three-point shooting. He is not a player that needs the ball in his hands a lot and those are things that will likely work best alongside Young.

Grimes is a career 38.6% three-point shooter and per Cleaning the Glass, the Knick's defense is two points better per 100 possessions when he is on the floor.

For this trade to happen though, the Hawks would likely have to take on Evan Fournier, who signed a big contract with New York but has completely fallen out of the rotation. However, Fournier's contract has a team option for next season. Atlanta could trade for Grimes and then be free of his contract this summer. The deadline to make a decision on that option is June 29th, 2024.

I think this is a trade that the Hawks should be interested in. Grimes is a young player who would fit well with their biggest star and it would make the Hawks younger. Bogdanovic is having a great season, but this might be the right kind of deal for Atlanta.
