Klay Thompson Breaks Silence On Warriors Future Amid Free Agency Speculation
Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson is facing a pivotal NBA offseason, stepping into free agency with his future at the franchise hanging in the balance. During his exit interview, just a day after the Warriors’ season concluded with a loss in the play-in tournament, Thompson appeared unruffled about the looming decisions.

“Considering it’s April 17th, I don’t think I have to pivot that quickly,” Thompson remarked, indicating he’s in no rush to make immediate plans with free agency set to begin on July 1st.

While Thompson hasn’t spent much time pondering his next move, his teammates, including Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and Warriors coach Steve Kerr, have expressed a strong desire for his return. Curry couldn’t fathom not playing alongside Thompson, and Green was emphatic about keeping Thompson on the team as the optimal decision for the organization.

“It means a lot,” Thompson said, appreciating the support from his team. “We’ve been through the highest of highs and lows together.”

Thompson’s journey this season has been one of evolution and reflection. After a slower start and a brief stint with the second unit, he regained his form post-All-Star break, returning to the starting lineup and playing what he described as his best basketball in the season’s final months.

One key takeaway for Thompson this season has been the importance of resilience. “I learned not to be a ‘frontrunner’—not shying away from the bad moments and just embracing the great ones,” he shared.

Looking ahead, Thompson’s priority remains clear: he aims to continue winning. “I would like to win again. One for the thumb would be nice,” he mused, suggesting that as long as the Warriors can show their appreciation—monetarily or otherwise—he sees a future in the Bay Area.

Green voiced confidence that the organization would find the right way to appreciate Thompson, ensuring his stay. Thompson himself praised the Warriors’ ownership for their support over the years, leaving his long-term commitment open-ended.

“Every year I give my best effort. And the ownership group has been great. I have nothing but positive things to say about them,” Thompson remarked, adding, “I’m not trying to put an expiration date on my career.”

As discussions about his next contract unfold, there is a hope within the team that any new agreement with Thompson will align him with the remaining years on Curry and Kerr’s contracts, potentially setting the stage for Thompson’s final chapter in his illustrious career with the Warriors.
